Use What You Have

So, a little over a year ago I started "micro-sketching." I hadn't really drawn seriously, or consistently, in almost 10 years. I bought a Handbook brand sketch book, some PITT Artist Markers and decided that I'd spend 15 to 20 minutes on my lunch breaks just sketching in this little book. It's been healthy for me, all the way around. I started posting these micro-sketches on my Facebook page, then on Twitter, then I started posting them on my blog.

Sounds pretty simple... that's because it is. This one simple decision has opened the door to new friends and creative relationships, a newfound love of art and illustration, and an extensive world of connections that I'd never dreamed possible.

I'm never gonna stop sketching. I don't care what I've got to work with. Today, all I had to use were a few mostly dried up pens and some highlighters, and less than 15 minutes to spare, but I used them. That's the trick to solving just about anything in life. Just use what you have, then take a simple step forward. One action will lead to another action, and then things just grow from there. This falls right in line with my personal motto, "when you don't know what to do, just do something!"

The Great Altese!

Like I said in my last post, I've just finished up a big project so I'm chompin' at the bit to work on some new things. Luckily, today I got to work from home. I was able to really sink my teeth into some of my back logged projects, and I still had time to finish up a Galactus ATC sketch that I've been wanting to redo.

See, I've been in the middle of an ATC trade with the mega-talented Chrissie Altese, who I met through an ATC trade with the equally talented Wynn Ryder. Because I've been so busy lately that I'd failed to finish up her final card, but I made plans to get that done tonight.

After I finished up my days work, I logged in to my blog reader and noticed that Chrissie had posted the cards she had done for me over at her blog, and what a treat for the eyes! She completely nailed these cards. As I say almost every trade, I think I may have won out on this one. My little sketches are nowhere near as good as hers, plus she's fantastic with color (which I am not). I'm more comfortable using black and white, but I'm thinking I need to start stretching my color legs a bit in the future.

Anywho, here are the cards I did for Chrissie; Galactus, the Punisher and a character I'd never heard of before, Modesty Blaise. I'm going to throw in the first Galactus card that I did, for good measure. I was disappointed in it, but maybe Chrissie will like it (or she can trade it off to someone else).

Like I've said before, ATC trades are an enjoyable hobby. They allow me to meet some of the most friendly and talented people on the web, plus acquire several nice pieces of art in the process. There's much more to ATC trading than building a collection; it's about building relationships for me.

Make sure you stop by Chrissie's blog and check out the cards she did for this trade. I think you'll all agree, Chrissie Altese is one of the great ones. Thanks for stopping by!

"SHINE" A Parker Brand Micro-Sketch

This Saturday I finished up a project that I've been working on for over 4 months. While the end result of the project was not what I hoped for, the project was still very rewarding in many other ways and I'm pretty proud of the way it was handled. I had the opportunity to work with some really good people throughout the experience, and I got to meet some of the most honorable, hard working professionals I've ever met in my life. That all being said, I am a glad I can close the book on this one and begin working on the long list of projects I've gained during the time since I first started working on the aforementioned project.

On Sunday, since it was so beautiful outside, and since I knew that I'd have an incredibly busy work week ahead of me, I decided to spend some time out at the park with my wife and sketch a bit. You know, my last sketch was reflective of the worst in people, the duplicitous, all that is bad in humanity, so for this sketch I wanted it to be hopeful and bright, to represent joy, even in the face the undesirable parts of human nature.

Conner Kent, the current Superboy, was a good choice for this. Conner, a clone created from the DNA of both Lex Luthor and Superman, is a very positive and happy character. He's struggled against the darker parts of his nature and has put himself on the right path, taking the high road. Conner chose to be a hero, not a villain, and that means something.

I think we all have that kind of choice to make sometimes-to do the right thing, the smart thing, the best thing-but we're often tempted to take the easy path. It's easy to be ugly and hateful, to get caught up in a tide of negative emotions, to want to get revenge, or inflict pain on someone who we think has wronged us. In many ways, that's the type of society that we've become. It's much harder, and more noble, to take the path that leads to hope and light for everyone.

So, with those thoughts in mind, I drew this quick pen and marker sketch. It's a simple sketch, not one of my best, but this little drawing was about more than the end result on the paper. It was about parting the clouds and letting the light shine in. It was about hitting the pause button on the grind, the pulling and hauling. It was about hitting the reset button and gearing up for a brand new day.

Sorry to get so heavy, but I find it's healthy to take time to reflect on things from time-to-time. You know I always appreciate anyone who stops by to look at the pictures, and even more the ones who take the time to read the post.

Peace.

"ENVY" A Parker Brand Micro-Sketch (or "Yellow & Blue Make Green")

Well, tomorrow is Saint Patrick's Day, so I figured I'd crank out a really quick marker sketch to post that features the holiday's color... GREEN! I wish I could say that I drew this because I was thinking about St. Patty's Day, but sadly that's not really why I picked the Green Goblin for my subject.

You see, I've been working on a project since last November, a project that's wrapping up real soon, and it's had my brain all wrapped up in two specific colors; yellow and blue (we all know what color that makes). I won't go into it too much, but I can say that in working on this project I've had the pleasure to work with some really great, honorable, hard working individuals, but I've also seen some prominent people in our community who wear great public faces, really show an ugly, dark side that has left a nasty mark on my hometown.

It's pretty funny, because it really does make me think of good 'ol Norman Osborn right now,... the Iron Patriot! America's Hero, her favorite son. Looks great in public, but deep down we all know he's just the Goblin, a deceiver and liar, a yellow coward, a villain to the core, all green with envy. Hang on. What what was I talking about again?

Anyway, that's about all I have to say on that for now, but I can say that I think the clouds are going to part real soon, and my little city will be thankful for blue skies again. I hope you folks enjoy your Saint Patty's day tomorrow. Have a green beer. Sing a song. Kiss a baby. Eat a clover. Just smile and laugh. Be happy. Have some fun no matter what you find yourself doing. Hope you dig the marker sketch. G'night!

The Green is BACK!

Well, it's been a pretty nasty, rainy winter down here in Louisiana, so when you have a beautiful day like today, with warm weather and blue skies, you better bet your buttons that I'm going to take advantage of it. We're finally seeing some green in our yard; the clover is crawling all around. It was so nice to see these signs of spring, that my wife and I decided to go spend some time at Frasch Park, just reading and sketching. I decided to whip up a quick Green Lantern micro-sketch. Nothing fancy, just fun. Anyway, I figured I'd share it with you guys while I had a minute. What a glorious day!

Three Card Night: An Artist Trading Card Sketch-Up

I've been getting together with a group of friends every couple of weeks to have a sketch-up. Basically, we pick some sort of subject matter, then sit down for a few hours and work on the project in whatever medium we choose. You may remember my post about our first such night, and my buddy Erik's post over on his blog, featuring work from our second sketch-up.

Last night we decided to have an Artist Trading Card jam, where each of us would produce three cards each, then at the end of the night we'd draw numbers to see which cards we get to take home, except our own, of course.

I wanted to have some fun and use my Tombo markers to add some bright color to what I was going to work on. I started the night with a quick, two color warm-up sketch in my book of heroes. My subject? GALACTUS! This was a good way to start the night. From there, I moved on to my three cards; Power Girl, Thor and Darkseid.

I had pre-cut some cards from vellum stock, and then I ended up drawing on the wrong side of a couple of the cards before I realized what I'd done. I've gotta say, it was a lot of fun to draw fast and furious. The cards turned out a lot different from the things I usually do because of the time allowed, and the addition of color.

I ended up coming home with a Stewie Griffen card, a card featuring "Magic Fingers" and a Rock Star. This was a fun jam and I'm looking forward to doing it again real soon. If you want to see all of the cards that were drawn at the sketch-up then head on over to my buddy Erik's blog and take a look-see.

As always, thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your time and interest. Really.

"Galactus Eat World" A Parker Brand ATC Sketch

Had a little time to work on the 2nd card in my trade with Chrissie Altese. She requested Galactus as 1 of the 3 cards I'm working on for her set. I used my Sable brush to ink this one and I was pretty happy with it, then I added the grey and immediately felt like I'd messed up. I think I'm going to go for a do-over on this one.

I've got to say, as much as I like using my Pocket Brush, the Sable just destroys it when it comes to control. Still, just shouldn't have added so much grey to his face.

Anywho... I'll post the do-over when I finish it. For now, I'm nursing a headache and think I need some rest. Peace, friends.

I Want Your "Hex" - A Parker Brand Micro-Sketch

If you know me at all, then you probably know that I've been a Jonah Hex fan ever since I first stumbled into my Dad's collection back in the 80s. Being a fan, and having a moderate amount of skill as a sketch artist, I like to take a stab at 'ol hatchet face from time-to-time.

Anyway, I felt like I had one more micro-sketch in me tonight and I figured my pal Jonah would be as good a subject as any. Here's hopin' that the film does my main man justice,... old west style.

You Don't Know Dick (or "Revisiting Grayson")

So, we had a lot of fun stuff to do today as a family. First we went to my daughter's testing, which will decide whether or not she gets accepted into the art program at Lake Charles Boston Academy of Learning (she did really well, by the way). We had a fun lunch, spent some time in the sunshine out at Prien Lake Park and then went to Hobby Lobby to get the kids some new art supplies (they earned them by doing good on their report cards).

I had some time to crank out a quick sketch in my book of heroes, and had Nightwing on the brain. I've drawn him before, but I recently traded my pal Erik the original art (of which you can buy the print in my Etsy Shop) for a really sweet Dick Grayson/Nightwing action figure. I wanted to have another piece of original art that featured Mr. Dick Grayson as Robin, Nightwing and Batman, so I broke out the sketch kit and put down some ink and marker for about 20 minutes.

The sun, my family, some ink... a lot of dang fun, I tell ya.

BONUS: My wife cracked me up on the drive home. She said, "you know, it's starting to stay lighter a lot darker." Now, I know she meant "lighter a lot later," but it was still pretty funny.

Anyway, I've got more things to post real soon, but the "real" job has had me pretty much buried up to the eyeballs. Don't count the Parker Brand out though. I'm not out of creative juice yet. See ya!

"Do You Feel Lucky? Well, Do Ya... Frank?" A Punisher ATC Sketch

I've been really lucky since I've entered the world of Artist Trading Cards. It's pretty amazing how one trade leads to another. It's a real pleasure, and such a treat to see what the artists I'm trading with come up with.

I feel really lucky to be working on my current 3 card trade with Chrissie Altese. Her blog is loaded with creative eye candy (she's an incredible figure artist) and I feel pretty dang grateful that she agreed to do this trade. One of the characters that Chrissie requested was the Punisher.

I haven't drawn the mighty Frank Castle since I was in High School, so I was kind of excited to take a stab at it. I could have just drawn a classic Frank, but I wanted to do something just a bit different. Just as Wynn Ryder used Billy Idol to inspire his John Constantine card, I wanted to use another classic crime fighting bad ass as my inspiration for Frank. What better inspiration that Clint Eastwood. But, rather than go for the Dirty Harry look, I decided to go in the direction of Josey Whales. I didn't want to mimic Clint's exact features (it still needed to be the Punisher), but I definitely wanted to capture a lot of Clint's squinty eyed glare.

Going that direction made this card a lot of fun. I hope Chrissie likes it. Now, on to my next card... GALACTUS!
